mother zoe - book

Photographer Constanza Oxenford presents her book Madre Zoe, an intimate and emotional work that pays tribute to Zoe Tobares, the woman who cared for her since her childhood and who was the protagonist of the highly valued documentary photography exhibition of the same name. The exhibition, curated by Eduardo Stupía and exhibited at the OdA gallery, was the starting point of a journey that naturally led to the writing of this book.

Mother Zoe is more than a biography, it is a reflection on caregivers, those women who play the role of mothers to children in the context of other people's homes. Through her moving stories, Cotty shares her personal story with Zoíta, as she affectionately calls her, but also invites us to reflect on the role of these women in Argentine society.

During the exhibition, visitors to the gallery were deeply moved by the images and the memories they evoked. Many felt the need to share their own stories, opening a dialogue about the invisible and often unrecognized role of these caregivers. This collective awakening of memory was what prompted the author to write this book, broadening the focus of the exhibition to give voice to an experience shared by many families.

“Writing this book was like giving birth again, an experience as intense as motherhood itself. Zoe was a mother to me, and reliving our story allowed me not only to honor her, but also to shed light on the stories of other 'Zoes' who, from silence, have lovingly cared for and raised us. I hope that this book awakens readers' own memories and that we learn to value those bonds that we often take for granted.”

The book was presented with the support of the Patronage Program of the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
